Building and Facility Inspections

The University’s Fire and Life Safety Office conducts annual building inspections for non-residential buildings to identify potential fire and life safety hazards that may impact the safety and welfare of students, staff, faculty and visitors of North Carolina State University. Through annual fire and life safety inspections, the University’s Fire and Life Safety Office ensures North Carolina State University’s buildings comply with the codes recognized by the State of North Carolina Department of Administration State Construction Office, the North Carolina Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshal and the North Carolina State University.

The University’s Fire and Life Safety Office works with the North Carolina Department of Administration State Construction Office in all final acceptance inspections on campus. Assisting the State Construction Office, the University’s Fire and Life Safety Office identifies potential fire and life safety issues in a new construction and addresses any issues prior to the completion of the building.

Fire Extinguisher Inspections

N.C. State University maintains a large inventory of fire extinguishers. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requires that all fire extinguishers be inspected monthly, annually and tested at specific times, depending on the type of extinguisher. The University’s Fire and Life Safety Office manages the inspection and testing of NC State University’s fire extinguishers.  NFPA 10 requires portable fire extinguishers be installed at a maximum travel distance of 75 feet. If there is a fire extinguisher located within 75 feet of your room, then you do not need a fire extinguisher.

Sprinkler Testing and Inspections

The University’s Fire and Life Safety Office witnesses fire sprinkler system testing and inspections for all NC State University properties. The Fire Marshal adheres to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and the North Carolina State Construction Office’s standards and specifications for fire alarm and sprinkler systems. Facilities Operations notifies the building liaisons in advance of all testing. The liaisons notify the building occupants in advance.
