Fire Safety Guidelines
Construction Guidelines
The University’s Fire and Life Safety Office reviews all plans for renovations and construction of new buildings on campus to ensure compliance with all North Carolina codes and University Guidelines. This process ensures all buildings meet the need of the owner and are consistent with codes and industry standards.
Fire Alarm Guidelines
All fire alarm system acceptance and testing is witnessed by the University Fire and Life Safety Office and follows NFPA 72 standards. Fire alarms are tested monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually. The monthly, quarterly and annual fire alarm testing is conducted by the Facilities Operation’s Electronics Shop.
Sprinkler System Guidelines
Sprinkler systems installed and used at NC State meet the NFPA standard reference by NC Fire Code. These systems are maintained by Facilities Operations.
Safe Hay Storage
Separate hay storage barns are preferable. Minimize multi-use buildings if possible.Structure ideally 100 ft. from other buildings – exposure vulnerability and ember travel. Upper-level storage with a solid floor more optimum than ground floor storage. Place pallets under the hay to allow for air circulation if feasible. Keep loose hay/straw swept up.
